Planning is the stage that determines whether an essay feels controlled or chaotic. When it is skipped, drafting becomes uncertain and slow. When it is done well, writing becomes a sequence of clear decisions.

A 1500 word essay is not written from nothing. It is built from a plan that fixes the question, the answer, and the path between them. This lesson shows you how to create that plan before you draft a single paragraph.

By the end of this lesson, you will have a complete planning method you can reuse in any subject.

Planning is not preparation for writing. It is the first stage of writing.

⭐ Why planning matters

Most difficulty appears when drafting begins too early. Without a plan, you are forced to think about structure, content, wording, evidence, and clarity at the same time. That load is unnecessary.

Planning reduces this by locking in a small set of decisions before drafting:

  • what the question is asking
  • what your answer will be
  • which ideas will support that answer
  • where each idea belongs

Once these decisions are made, drafting becomes execution rather than guesswork.

A clear plan turns a large task into a predictable sequence.


⭐ Part 1: Unpacking an essay question

Every strong essay begins with accurate question analysis. Most questions contain three components: topic, task word, and scope. If any one of these is misunderstood, the essay can miss the task even if the writing is clear.

Example B · Business

Discuss the role of emotional intelligence in effective leadership

Evaluate the effectiveness of public health campaigns in reducing smoking rates

Once topic, task, and scope are clear, planning becomes straightforward.

Step 2: Select three sub-topics

Brainstorm broadly, then choose three ideas you can support with evidence.

Step 3: Draft a working thesis

A thesis is a one-sentence answer to the question.

Step 4: Build the full plan

Introduction

  • focus: challenges and opportunities for students
  • signposting: time management, help seeking, engagement
  • thesis: as stated above

Body Paragraph 1 · Time Management

  • Subject: time management in online study
  • Point: routines support consistency and progress
  • Evidence: research linking time management and outcomes
  • Explanation: reduces cognitive load and decision-making
  • Link: leads into help-seeking behaviours

Body Paragraph 2 · Help Seeking

  • Subject: academic and technical support
  • Point: early help prevents disengagement
  • Evidence: studies on persistence and support

At this point, the essay is already designed. Drafting fills in what planning has already shaped.
